In performing arts schools, many times graduating classes specializing in drama or dance perform a group piece referred to as “senior jazz” which is actually pretty nebulous, and often choreographed by the students themselves. Musically speaking, the term brings to mind the stuffy big band that older folks are fond of. Nothing experimental or loose, with a swing that is actually quite rigid. Or perhaps, looking at it from a different angle, Senior Jazz as a label for elevator music. Nothing has less street cred than a soprano saxophone instrumental version of a Peter Frampton song
